  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Reverse-board printed digipack CD with track info and Danilo's liner notes.

Danilo Plessow (Motor City Drum Ensemble), reaches globally for inspiration for his 'fabric presents' compilation. As with his monthly radio show 'State of Rhythm' on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM station, Danilo plays with a range of eras, locations and genres, with an emphasis on instrumentation.

The mix was recorded when the planet was struggling with the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Danilo asked friends from all over the world what meaning music has for them, then cut their comments into the flow of the compilation. Their statements become ghost voices of a utopia whose relevance seems to be greater than ever in the face of global political and social conflict.

The interplay of styles is from the off: US composer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s quartet merges with the tablas of Franco-Chilean jazz trio SKUAS who hand over to the Berlin techno-dub kings Basic Channel, followed by the New York organist Ray Castoldi aka Scientist. The comp includes both Danilo’s exclusive and delicate ‘Nightfall’ with jazz instrumentalists Francesco Geminiani and Peter Schlamb lending their talents, as well as 'Decay/Sustain/Release' under his project name Basic-Variation. The furious finale, introduced by the french avant-garde rock sounds of Jean-Claude Petit's 'Stones Of Law', leads on to Moonstarr's'Detriot', and concludes with John Kongo's disco-infused 'I'm Dreaming'; the mix and its author are brought back to themselves - a boundless and timeless manifesto, a declaration of love to the unifying power of music.

about

“Nightfall” was done when I was almost finished with the mix, when I kind of knew how the mix would feel like, and in this way i quite enjoyed working on it, as I've never composed a song specifically for a certain place in a DJ Mix. Years ago, when I did “LOVE” for the DJ-Kicks Mix, I had worked the other way around - I ended up building the mix around my song, so I really wanted to do the opposite this time around.
As the mix became quite heavy on the more electronic side, which was something i did on purpose also as a nod to fabric and the series, I felt like I wanted my song to have a bit of a more loose, live-played feel to it.

I was recording a jazz quartet led by my friend Hermon Mehari, a Kansas City trumpet player, at my old studio in germany in 2018. Peter was playing vibraphone and piano on that session, and in between some of the recordings for Hermon, Peter just jammed along to a sketch of mine I had worked on some days before that, which consisted of the raw 808, a baseline from an italian synthesizer, and the piercing lead sound from an Arp Omni keyboard.

2 years later I finally used those takes on the song for fabric. Another buddy of mine in paris, Francesco Geminiani, ended up bringing his Buchla synthesizer to the studio here one afternoon, and we added this as well as some saxophone. I then just combined both sessions, added some more percussions and a bit of guitar to it and then did the final mixdown of the song. - Danilo Plessow
